Funeral Canticle, for chorus (1996) George Mosley, baritone The Choir of the Academy of Ancient Music Paul Goodwin For John Tavener, mortality is a knot in a string whose ends extend forever in both directions, and while virtually all of his works have an air of prayerfulness and godly mystery to them, in memoriam works such as the Funeral Canticle from 1996 afford the opportunity for deep musical and poetic rumination on the duration of life and the infinity of existence. Though mortal mourning is never entirely absent from works in this vein, it is coupled by an assurance of celestial existence -- an assurance fueled by the composer's personal religiosity. The Funeral Canticle is one of two works inspired by the passing of the composer's father, Kenneth. The other, Eternal Memory, is a co-memorial to Tavener's father and to the late Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. While the ruminations of that work are more secularly philosophical -- it takes its text from William Blake's Auguries of Innocence and Eternity -- the Funeral Canticle is more explicitly religious, having been prepared for the interdenominational funeral service that his father had requested. Its texts include the kliros from the traditional Orthodox funeral service, interspersed with verses composed by Tavener's longtime friend, collaborator (Mary of Egypt, Akathist), and spiritual guide, Mother Thekla of the Monestary at Normanby. I've been paying more attention lately to the electronic, sampled side of music, and I just kept noticing more and more the incredible magnitude of influence it has on modern music. I know it's sort of an anti-traditionalist point of view, but I think that it's a really sweet new medium and the strides and innovations possible are pretty much endless. This lead me to start exploring more experimental artists that stand alone on this medium, which eventually brought me to Bonobo, a British sampling artist with a subdued and elegant sound and a really strange sense of humor (I guess that's a given seeing as his stage name refers to a chimpanzee). He uses eclectic mixtures of traditional ethnic sounds (sitars, bongo drums etc...) paired with driving bass lines and syncopated rhythms to come up with a really unique sound. One of the things I love about his music is the way he subtly develops the song as it progresses. He is a master of changing one small thing, like moving a beat from the '1' to the 'and' or just changing a couple notes somewhere to create something familiar to what you've been listening to, but totally different at the same time. It's great music to chill out to, do homework to, bike to, run to, listen to when you're stoned, fool around to-it complements pretty much anything involving a relaxed atmosphere. Fatih Akin has committed himself against the planned construction of the Ilisu Dam, and the expulsion of the resident population in South-East Turkey as early as 2007. When his long-time friend, the Kurdish singer and composer Aynur, asked him to shoot a music video, the answer came easily: "Sure, and we do it in Hasankeyf," The suiting song was quickly found a haunting, poetic ballad about uprooting, hope, courage, and doom. Also an array of generous sponsors readily backed up the project, and in early fall of 2009, the two teamed up with an energetic crew, and flew to the cavernous mountains of the Tigris valley close to the the Syrian and Iraqi border. The outcome is a declaration of love for the wonderful music of Aynur, as well as the unique beauty of the 10000 years old cultural site and hometown Hasankeyf, which is threatened by inundation.
