"Tiananmen Square" and "Zhao Ziyang" No Longer Censored on China's Internet?

For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me The Chinese Communist Party is soon holding its 18th National Congress. Many sensitive words such as "Zhao Ziyang" and "June Fourth," which have long been censored by China's firewall, are suddenly yielding results. Many Chinese Internet users say this is not a sign that the regime is lifting the taboo on those keywords, but rather indicates a high-level power struggle within the Chinese Communist Party. Content: On Tuesday morning, many Chinese netizens discovered that the search term "Zhao Ziyang" appears in Baidu Encyclopedia, a web-based Chinese encyclopedia. Baidu Encyclopedia, together with the Baidu search engine, is heavily self-censored. But now, when the politically sensitive search terms "Zhao Ziyang" or "June Fourth" are entered into Baidu search engine, more than one million results show up. Zhao Ziyang served as the Premier of People's Republic of China from 1980 to 1987, and the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee from 1987 to 1989. He is most known in the West for his supportive stance towards the student democracy movement. In 1989, he spoke to students at Tiananmen Square just before the massacre. That would be his last public appearance, as he spent the rest of his life under house arrest. In China, the Tiananmen Square massacre is known as the "June Fourth" incident, and mention of it is taboo. On Tuesday night ...

China's Wen Preparing For Tiananmen Massacre Condemnation?

For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao made news with some reformist statements last week, which were quickly followed by the purging of leftist Communist Party official Bo Xilai. Now, some analysts say that Wen may also be making a statement about one of the most divisive incidents in the Party's recent history. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's speech last Wednesday was a capstone to both a major national meeting, and to a career. He had become known for using the event to push for at least the idea of reform—usually emphasizing gradual change. But did this year's speech, his last, actually serve as a chance to act? While Wen spoke in the generalized terms that are characteristic of Communist regime leaders, according to the Financial Times newspaper and some other observers, the underlying message was highly suggestive of something almost unthinkable mere weeks ago. Namely, that Wen might attempt to establish a Party re-think of the response to the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. While he never mentioned those protests, Wen did make a strong statement about a similarly divisive episode in Chinese history, the Cultural Revolution. Cautioning that the mistakes of that nationwide movement could still be repeated, Wen made an implicit attack on the leftist faction of the Communist Party. This was followed the next day by the sacking of leftist protégé Bo Xilai, Party secretary ...

They are skeptical of what Wen is able to achieve so late in his premiership, saying the contending factions within the Communist Party will likely stop any effort for real political reform. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao hopes to push for political reform, according to the Financial Times, citing an anonymous source inside the Chinese regime. Part of that attempt would be to redress the Communist Party's bloody crackdown of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. Wu Renhua, a former teacher at the China University of Political Science and Law, was in the middle of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. He says Wen Jiabao has left it too late in his term to be discussing political reform. [Wu Renhua, Witness of Tiananmen Square Protest] "I don't think he can achieve what he says. He's been the Premier for two terms -- that's 10 years, and now he has less than 6 months left. If he truly wanted to discuss political reform, he should not have left it to just before his departure to reiterate it." Tiananmen Leader Calls Democracy a Prerequisite for Cross-straight Relations

Activist Wang Dan made the comments at an event in Taiwan on Tuesday. Taiwan and mainland China—closely tied by business interests—maintain a status quo of each insisting there is only one China. But the view of how "China" should be governed differs dramatically on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. In recent years, business has formed the basis for the development of this relationship. But in Taiwan, democracy activist Wang Dan and standing committee member of the Democratic Progressive Party Luo Wenjia think democracy should serve as a prerequisite for improving cross-strait ties between Taiwan and China. They spoke at the release of the monthly journal "The Public Intellectual," founded by their Cross Strait Democracy Research Center. They were promoting the journal as a platform for exchange of opinions about democratic development in China. [Luo Wenjia, DPP Committee Member]: "When China raises the idea that for cross strait relations to develop the one China policy is a prerequisite, the prerequisite I think Taiwan should bring up is democracy. Soldiers Tricked into Firing on Tiananmen: WikiLeaks

One soldier claims he was tricked into firing on armed protestors. We get a glimpse of the harrowing stories that circulated after the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 from a cable recently released by WikiLeaks. The US Consulate cable, dated March 1990, gives an account of a PLA soldier who claims he was tricked into firing on civilian protestors in the square. The cable relays a story from an unnamed source. It describes what a soldier told his mother after the massacre: "He and his colleagues were all shooting in the air until word was passed through the ranks that one hundred of their number had disappeared—presumably killed by students. A quick check confirmed that over one hundred were missing. The soldier and his colleagues then became so upset that when ordered to shoot into the crowd, they opened fire with machine guns into the human wall before them." Yet the cable states that the 100 soldiers turned up again afterwards. This PLA unit was then confined to camp after the massacre, but the soldier referred to in the story did eventually get leave a year later. The cable goes on to tell how the soldier spent 20 days in a Christian church, begging for forgiveness. Tsai is chairman of Taiwan's Want Want China Times Group. Wang Dan said Tsai's words about China's democracy and the June 4 incident confused right and wrong. Wang would refuse China Times ever since. Wang's words were largely supported by netizens and caused media attention. The chairman of Taiwan's Want Want China Times Group, Tsai Eng-meng spoke recently to The Washington Post. Tsai said that the picture of stopping a tank using one's body in the June 4 Tiananmen incident shocked him. But that person is still "alive", "which indicates the 'massacre' is untrue, since not many people died." Facing Tsai Eng-meng's words, one of the Tiananmen student leaders, Wang Dan, expressed strong dissatisfaction and anger. Writing on his facebook on January 23, Tsai claimed not to buy the China Times anymore. Early morning of June 4, 1989, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) dispatched tanks to the Tiananmen Square. This resulted in a bloody suppression. The pictures of the massacre took by foreign journalists shocked the foreign world at that time. Another Tiananmen student leader, Fang Zheng, was also shocked by Tsai Eng-meng's words. Call to Remove Mao Zedong's Tiananmen Portrait

For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt Calls have emerged in China for the removal of an iconic portrait in Beijing. A small group of elderly Communist Party members says the giant portrait of Chairman Mao in Tiananmen Square is "shameful." The former officials say they know firsthand the disastrous results of many of Mao Zedong's policies and want the portrait to be taken down. For more than six decades, this portrait of Mao Zedong has overlooked Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Now a group of veteran Communist Party members are calling for it to be removed. They believe Mao's rule did more harm than good, and want his portrait to be replaced by one of Sun Yat-sen's—the man who founded Asia's first republic. The seven communist cadres from Yunnan Province issued an online letter on Saturday, October 15. They echoed earlier calls from six elders in Hubei Province to remove the portrait. The veterans say they experienced firsthand the disastrous policies Mao implemented during his rule, from 1949 to 1976. The letter lists Mao's policies, including denouncing more than three million intellectuals as right-wing extremists. Many were tortured to death in jail. Mao also initiated the "Great Leap Forward" campaign—widely believed to have resulted in a great famine that starved to death over 30-million people. It is because if they do, Falun Gong will be the next issue for them. These will all involve overturning the CCP's policy, which will destroy the CCP's legitimacy. Tiananmen Anniversary - China

May 2009 On 4th June 1989, tanks rolled into Tiananmen Square. They were told to clear the demonstrators at any cost - and they did. Zheng Fang lost his legs in the brutal reprisal - 20 years later he tells his story. When Chinese pro-democracy official Hu Yaobang died, the nation wanted to mourn him. We requested permission to take part in the memorial ceremonies but our request was denied, explains Zheng Fang. Thousands believed the government was acting irrationally and in retaliation descended upon Tiananmen Square. Students and intellectuals swarmed to the memorial camps, which had evolved into a larger calling for democracy and the resignation of Premier Li Peng. There was a lot of passion amongst us students but we were also very naïve. After 7 weeks of protests the army was ordered to clear the Square. The tanks moved in on us from behind. They must have seen that we were leaving peacefully. So why did they plough into us at high speed? Zheng was knocked unconscious. When I woke up, I found I had lost my legs. Twenty years on and the number of those injured and killed is still unknown. With the Chinese press not even allowed to mention the event, Zheng, who has now applied for political asylum in America, is determined not to let it be forgotten. The important thing is that the truth is preserved. I do not want this to gradually slip from the Chinese collective memory.

Tiananmen Square - Holding Up A Tank

He would become known simply as 'Tank Man' or 'The Unknown Rebel'. The massive student protests were brutally put down on June 4th when the Chinese army attacked with tanks and trucks, firing indescriminately at the unarmed protesters, killing and injuring thousands. The Unknown Rebel confronted the tank column next day as the army withdrew. Neither his identity nor his fate have ever been established, reported by some to have been executed, and by others to be still alive. This music comes from the CD 'Image Conscious', music loosely hung on enduring news images. Music and video by Plug.

Two decades since Tiananmen 六四事件

www.scmp.com It has been 20 years since tanks rumbled into Tiananmen Square to end a student-led pro-democracy movement that had begun in the middle of April, 1989. The violent crackdown was covered by the western media and shocked the world. Hundreds of thousands of Beijingers participated in the protests, and unconfirmed reports said that about 3000 people, most civilians, were killed as PLA troops received orders to clear protestors from the square. Authorities insisted that only about 300 people died, 23 of them students, and ignored calls to publish a list of victims. In this slideshow, hear an eyewitness account about the days leading up to June 4 and the immediate aftermath from a tourist who was visiting Beijing at the time.
