Aiki (2002) is a movie which somehow reminds you of Karate Kid. It's about a passionate boxer who loses the meaning of his life after he is crippled in a car accident. After many fruitless attempts to find a martial arts club, he is finally accepted by a daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu master. Directed by Daisuke Tengan, starring Haruhiko Kato, Rie Tomosaka and Ryo Ishibashi. copyright: Aiki Production Comittee

One of the challenges that all Aikido teachers face is how to get students to stop relying on brute strength to move their partners. It was this challenge that led me to develop an exercise that I call "Aiki Push Hands". In this exercise both partners place their hands together and try to push each other over. It is exactly this kind of training that shows how reliance on muscular strength will not bring you to your goal. By keeping your upper body relaxed and fluid, you can move and be able to absorb your partners pushes. By keeping tension in your hara (lower abdomen) you become very stable and difficult to push over. I find this exercise to be a great way to start the class. Aiki Push Hands helps to get student's minds off of strength and allows them to feel more of the relaxed power we are striving to develop.

We were inspired by our interview with Shihan Seiji Tanaka (8th dan, JAA/USA) and a recent article by Toby Threadgill (Shindo Yoshin-ryu) about handling full speed attacks. Bob King and I (Jeff Davidson) decided to try out some "Aiki-Boxing". It's very difficult to time Aikido techniques off of a boxer, so we thought this would be a fun way to get some practice in. The first two rounds are body movement (tai sabaki) only, the "boxer" is only going about 50% speed (for a warm-up) then we kick it up a bit and get to about 75% speed. Thought it might be an interesting excercise. We'll post some more as we kick up the intensity a bit. Hope you all enjoy! Check out our podcast at www.usaikido.com or visit our club page at http

A sample from the soon to be available "Aiki and Connection" DVD set. This is from a two DVD set focusing on how to use the body and the attention to create a true center to center connection in Aikido and how to use this power rather than muscle power in ones technique. Not really a waza video but rather lots of instruction and exercises like the one in the clip.

Aiki Yawara jitsu (Small hand bo) For Stefano:) He is a fine student and friend. He has plenty to teach those willing to learn. My respect brother! Please vist his page at www.youtube.com The name Yawara-Jitsu comes from the millenary Yawara or "agility art", from which have arisen various schools such as Wa-Jitsu, Tai-Jitsu, Kumuishi,or Kempo. I call what I teach with the Yawara, Aiki Yawara-Jitsu as its my own view on the use of the Yawara with the rules of Aiki applied to its use in Waza. This is a protective tool that is shaped like a flashlight or a ballpoint pen. It can be made of metal or wood or plastic. Many kinds and styles are for sale online. The yawara-bo is used to apply pressure in certain parts of the body to immobilize an attacking person. The pressure applied with this tool is used with jiu-jitsu or Aiki techniques. Even a very small person/child can bring a very large attacker down with the Yawara with ease if trained in the art. The beauty about this weapon is that it is so small it can be neatly concealed to give your attacker the impression that you are unarmed thus giving you an edge. Please make sure its legal for you in your country/state to carry or own. Again I say please train with care as with all Martial arts Injury, Death, etc can be a result of careless training.
