Although the majority of these composers were very famous at their time, their works are today quite unknown, and very rarely, if never, recorded. The central piece is Giovanni Felice SANCES Stabat Mater dolorosa: the longest (10-11), considered a masterpiece of the times, and a thoroughly poignant work.

Chanticleer~Beata Plainsong, arr. Joseph Jennings From "Chanticleer~Sound in Spirit" (2005 Warner Classics) Plainsong, also referred to as Gregorian Chant or chant, encompasses the vast reportoire of liturgal song assembled over the course of seven or eight centuries, beginning roughly around 700 AD. In recent years, the relevance of essence of chant has been rediscovered. It provides a "sound corridor" through wich both the singer and the listener can enter into an unknown and mysterious spiritual realm. It leads to a place of beauty and serenity and into a presence that trancends religiosity. It accompaines the journey from believing to knowing. "Beata" is an adaption of the communion antiphon "Beata viscera" from the Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Humility, beauty and grace and an intimate relationship betweeen the next and the music characterize this haunting melody. Joseph Jennings Beata viscera Mariae Virginis, quae portaverunt aeterni Patris filium. Blessed entrails of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which carried the Son of the Eternal Father.

Chant group Psallentes consists of six professional singers, presenting a vivid performance of fifteenth century chant. Here you can listen to (the first half of) the responsory 'O beata Trinitas' while watching the same in the original manuscript (B-Gu 15/1: an antiphoner from the Abbey of Bavo in Ghent, 1481).
